Hose Tops or Caddies (Gaelic name meaning stripped) were used by the British Highland Regiments as well as many other kilted troops. The Hose Top is essentially a half sock with the foot portion missing. Soldiers typically wear these in conjunction with spats (Canvas Leggings Gaiters)
and Hose Top Flashes.
When WW1 really started to explode, the colorful hose tops were replaced with olive green or sandy colored hose tops. In conjunction with these soldiers would wear puttees.
